How to Eat Keto When Eating Out, Without Ruining Your Progress

Cooking keto at home is the easy part — you control every ingredient. The real test is a restaurant menu, a fast food drive-through, or a friend's dinner table. Here's how to handle each one without derailing your progress or making everyone else's night about your diet.
The general rule
Almost every menu has a protein and a vegetable on it somewhere — you just have to build your own plate out of what's already there. The three questions that cover 90% of situations: What's the protein? Can I swap the starchy side for a vegetable? Is there a sauce I should ask about?
Sauces and dressings are the real risk
Most people don't get tripped up by the obvious carbs — the bread, the fries, the rice. They get tripped up by sauces. Many are thickened with flour or cornstarch, or sweetened more than you'd expect. When in doubt, ask for it on the side, or skip it and use olive oil and vinegar instead.
By cuisine
Steakhouse or grill: The easiest category. Any cut of meat, plus a side salad or grilled vegetables instead of potatoes or bread.
Burger place: Order it "protein style" or as a lettuce wrap, skip the bun, keep the cheese and bacon, go easy on ketchup and barbecue sauce.
Italian: Skip the pasta and bread basket. Look for grilled meat or fish dishes, a caprese salad, or a protein served with vegetables instead of a side of pasta.
Mexican: Order it in a bowl instead of a tortilla — meat, cheese, guacamole, salsa, sour cream. Skip the rice and beans.
Sushi: Sashimi (no rice) is the safest choice. Ask about sauces, since some are sweetened.
Fast food: Most chains can make a burger without the bun, or you can order a grilled chicken option and skip the bread. Skip the fries and soda.
At someone else's house
This is the hardest scenario because you're not in control of the menu. A few things that actually work: eat a small keto-friendly snack before you go so you're not starving in front of the food, focus your plate on protein and vegetables, and don't feel obligated to explain your diet to everyone at the table. "I'm skipping the rice tonight, thanks" ends most conversations quickly.
What one off-plan meal actually does
One higher-carb meal isn't going to undo weeks of consistent eating. What matters is what you do at the next meal — going back to your normal way of eating, not treating one dinner as a reason to give up on the week.
